2010 International Cartoon Contest - Naji Al-Ali on Palestine

Naji al Ali and Handala are two symbols of the Palestinian national resistance who never yielded to the occupiers since decades. The palestinian cartoonist Naji al Ali, who had shelted to a refugee camp in Lebanon after the 1948 occupation when he was 10 years old and who has been assasinated by Israeli agents in London in 1987 has left a child to all of the peoples of the world; it is Handala, a child who will always be 10 years old. Under nearly 40 thousand cartoons who narrate Palestine, appears Handala as he has turned us his back. He is offended to everybody who do not hear the voice of a people of which the country and right to life is stolen; and it is only after the liberation of Palestine that he will turn his face again. We started to work to commemorate the memory of Naji al Ali, who dedicated his life of 50 years to the stuggle to free his country, and he did it mainly by his cartoons. We know well that the zionist occupiers have even fear of the designs. Let them have fear! We shall continue to design Palestine. Not only the Palestine who fights, but also the Palestine who breathes...

We're calling everyone who want to support this heritage as well as to support this struggle, to participate to the 2010 International Cartoon Contest "Naji al Ali" on Palestine and to make heard the sound of Naji al Ali, Handala and Palestine.

5th Big Boat of Humour International Contest - Poland

In Polish, the word LODZ means a vehicle propelled by sails, oars or engine, used as a means of water transport. Almost all around the world, it carries symbolic connotations:
•it is an allegory of human fate in both individual and collective dimension,
•it is associated with courage, when imagining sailors embarking on a voyage across rough oceans,
•it symbolizes human longing for adventure and some change in life.

LODZ is also the name of the second largest city in Poland which is an inland city with no access to navigable waters. We hope that the name of our metropolis will become an  inspiration for graphic artists, especially those with a flair for satire. The theme should be taken up with humour, with panache and perhaps with a bit of poetry... This explanation, indispensable to foreigners, is also aimed at the Poles, for whom the popular usage of the name of the city might have blurred the sharpness of its paradox.

For the fifth time, the Big Boat of Humour invites all the artists, who would like to face the theme of LODZ, to enter the competition.

RULES

1. The aim of the contest is:
•promoting the city, changing the traditional perception of LODZ and challenging the stereotypical image of the city.
•creating an art gallery comprising works that could be used in actions promoting the city in a printed form or in the form of organized exhibitions.

2. It is an open contest. Everyone can participate in it, on condition that they submit their works with the application form before the regulatory deadline. The contest is an international event.

3. The theme the fifth Big Boat of Humour contest is ‘CITY - THE POWDER KEG’

(including computer graphics) or painting technique and should not be larger than A3 format (297x420 mm). Also copies issued by the author, described and signed by the author are accepted by the Jury as original graphic works. Photocopies and xerox copies of the works, computer printouts of scanned works or any other kind of duplication using multicopy techniques, for example offset printing, which serve as reproductions of a work, shall not be accepted by the Jury. Previously published works, works entered in other contests or works to which rights do not belong to the authors shall also be excluded from the contest.

5. Each participant may submit up to 5 works. The works should be unframed, provided with the name and the surname of the author and possibly the title on the reverse. The works should be accompanied with an entry form , which shall be tantamount to the acceptation of the contest regulations and a permission for publishing author's personal data contained in the form, and with a CD with the electronic form of submitted works (in TIFF format, the resolution of 300 dpi, 15 cm at the base), which is the condition of placing them in the catalogue.

6. The works should be sent to the following address: Lodzki Dom Kultury (LODZ Cultural Center), Traugutta 18, 90-113 LODZ, Poland till 31 August 2010 (with a note on an envelope "The Big Boat of Humour 2010").

2010 Eco cartoon exhibition, India

The sun, the moon and the stars would have disappeared long ago... had they happened to be within the reach of predatory human hands.

~Havelock Ellis, The Dance of Life, 1923

Man has two faces. He is the creator and destroyer too. But concerning to environment, he is always the destroyer.

If we look at it historically, man is continually destroying his environment, for changes to occur. One should flatten a hill or a mountain for one to build new roads and infrastructure. One has to cut all the trees in the forest for mans dreams in building houses and bridges to be realized.

Do business with the environment in mind - systematically

Environmentally conscious and resource-saving actions are essential for one and all today. The aim should always be to improve the economic and ecological conditions today for future generations.

Many organizations and social groups now have programs and activities dedicated to environmental issues.

As it is proven that, the cartoon is a powerful weapon against oppression and has a liberator role, where shows many times a reality from an unseen angle, the ignorant man is visualized the reality.

In this context, cartoonists forum attempts to organize an International Cartoon Exhibition on emphasizing the individual responsibility towards Environment.

Though, there are many efforts that have already been made to explain need of such awareness towards Environmental protection, www.indianink.org tries to make the program more effective by inviting cartoons in person from the prominent cartoons around the world.

2nd P.C.RATH MEMORIAL INTERNATIONAL WEB CARTOON CONTEST-2010

BOLANGIR, INDIA

PURNA CHANDRA RATH

SUPERINTENDENT OF ARCHAEOLOGY, PATNA STATE, BOLANGIR

(1909-1952)

It is an irony of life that often a lesser man, by well-planned orchestration, is installed on pedestals, while one really talented unfortunately gets a silent burial. Through passage of time, layers of dust gradually settle over what that brilliant man had achieved with dedication during his life-time and eventually the image of that man and his work, though deserving to be treasured, are permanently consigned to oblivion. Such has been the fate of late Sri Purna Chandra Rath, whose multi-dimensional genius could not fully blossom as Myeloid Leukemia (Blood Cancer) claimed him prematurely at the young age of 43. Within a brief span of about 12 years of creative life, he could accomplish a lot in cultural, social and political spheres by sheer will-force and organizational capability. Despite infrastructural deficiencies, financial constraints and geographical obstacles prevailing at his time, he over-stretched his energies to see his dreams come true. In the process, he untimely perished like a 'Candle burning at both ends'. (more :-  pcrath )

Dear Friends

The Ken Sprague Fund wishes to announce its third biennial international political cartoon competition. We hope you will be able to take part once again in this competition.

We would also be grateful if you would publicise the competition in your magazine, on your website and throughout your affiliated members and organisations.

This competition has now become one of the world’s leading competitions and draws in cartoonists from around the world. We hope this coming one will be even better and that cartoonists will rise to the challenge of commenting on the global economic crisis.

Warm regards

International Political Cartoon Competition 2010

The competition is open to cartoonists from all nations.

A first prize of £700, a second prize of £500 and a third prize of £300 as well as an ‘emerging artist’s prize’ of £150 (for 16-22 year-olds) will be awarded for cartoons which, in the opinion of the judges, best express the above theme. The judges’ decision wll be final. The jury, made up of leading cartoonists and well-known personalities, will be looking for clarity of message, cartooning skill and satirical humour.

In the first instance, the cartoon may be submitted in any form (originals, faxes, photocopies or electronically in at least 300 dpi resolution), although an original would be preferred. Those artists whose cartoons are short listed for exhibition and a prize will be notified by the organisers, after which they must submit the original.

Cartoons with text and/or captions not in English should (if possible) be accompanied by a translation. It would also be useful to have some idea of the situation being addressed by the cartoon if it refers to a specific social or political event/situation which may not be universally understood.

Each entry must be signed by the artist and accompanied by an address and contact details.

Entries to reach the organisers by May 1st 2010.

The results of the competition will be announced on June 1st 2010.

An exhibition of the best of the submissions will be organised in London and at the Appledore Visual Arts Festival and the prize-winning cartoons will be published in the Morning Star newspaper and other interested journals.

Unless the submitting cartoonist stipulates otherwise, the original cartoons and/or prints of the cartoons, after publication/exhibition, will be offered for sale. Any proceeds, less a small commission and transfer fees, will be paid to the originating artist.

The organisers retain the right to publish or exhibit any of the cartoons submitted, but undertake to give due credit to the artists and ensure they receive any royalties/payments that may accrue as a result.

The first ten cartoons will be displayed on our website at: www.kenspraguefund.org for a period of 12 months and later will become part of the page’s competition archive, accessible to visitors.

Artists submitting cartoons will automatically agree to abide by the above rules.

Sponsored by the Ken Sprague Fund together with the Appledore Visual Arts Festival and the Morning Star

Address to send submissions: Ken Sprague Fund Cartoon Competition, 11 Dorset Road, Ealing, London W5 4HU, United Kingdom. Email: comp2010@kenspraguefund.co.uk
