Dr. Gilad Fiskus, chairman of Quality dentist committee,and The Israeli Cartoon Museum, have teamed up together and produced an outstanding caricature exhibition, named- 'MY COMIC DENTIST'.

In the past 6 month we received some 800 caricatures drawn by artists, from over 50 countries. Due to the fact that very few drawings could have being classified as caricature and be differentiated from the cartoons, the judging committee decided to judge all the art works in one section.The amount of medals is the same as promised for the 2 sections. One gold medal, two silver,f our bronze and five honorable, all together 12 medals.
The winning artwork grant its artist with a 500$ first prize bonus.

The exhibition will be displayed at the Museum's web site- www.cartoon.org.il
In March 2010 the city of Holon will host an exhibition of the 45 top caricatures in an outdoors exhibition.

SPORTHUMOR 2009

the smile Olympics

 

Dear Colleague,

the second edition of the international humorist graphic event SPORTHUMOR, the smile

olympics, held in Fossano/CN from 9th to 17th May 2009, has been closed with a big

success, a sound attendance and a great interest from the media.

When the exhibition is ended, votes were counted, with the following results:

VALID VOTES 459, SPOILED VOTES 7, as follows:

FRANCO ORIGONE (Italy), votes 41, who won the prize of 2,500 Euros.

There follows, with 20 votes, the Macedonian cartoonist JORDAN POP-ILIEV, BENNY

(Italy) with 18 votes, with 16 votes the Italian FRANCO BRUNA and the Ukrainian JURIY

KOSOBUKIN.

The newspaper TUTTOSPORT and the magazine GUERIN SPORTIVO were our media

partners and supported the event.

Within this edition we decided to give a prize of 500 Euros to the best digital work.

The prize has been assigned by a technical jury committee to the Colombian LUIS

EDUARDO LEON.

The next edition will take place in Fossano/CN at the multifunctional premises of Acaja

Castle from 8th to 16th May 2010.

I would really like to thank you for your precious contribution in the event; you will receive

the invitation to participate in the new edition 2010 at the beginning of next year.

The jury for the 5th edition of the World Press Cartoon awarded the Grand Prix, selected from the winners of World Press Cartoon´s three categories, to the work “In the same Ship” by Mexican artist Naranjo.

Rogelio Naranjo was born in the state of Michoacán (Mexico) in 1937. He studied Art at the University of San Nicolás de Hidalgo and in 1965 he began working as a professional caricaturist in the newspaper EL DIA in Mexico City. In 1977, he won the National Prize for Journalism and, in 1987, the Manuel Buendia Prize for journalistic career.  Over a forty-year career, he has developed collaborations to the dailies EXCELSIOR, EL UNIVERSAL and EL DIA, as well as for the magazines SIEMPRE, PROCESO, NEXOS and many others.  He won, on two occasions, the 1st Prize of the  Bienal de Humorismo Gráfico de Cuba. He has won also the 1st Prize of Nicaragua´s Anti-Imperialism Caricature International Contest and the 2nd Prize of the former Soviet Union´s Humour for Peace International Contest. He has several books published. In 2008, he won the 2nd Prize for Gag at the World Press Cartoon - Sintra (Portugal).

 

For the Caricature  category, the jury awarded the following prizes:

1st Prize - “Ahmadinejad” by André Carrilho (Portugal) published in Diário de Notícias (Portugal) on 12.07.08;

André Carrilho was born in Amadora (Portugal) in 1974 and has been working since 1992 as illustrator, graphic designer, animator and caricaturist for the main Portuguese newspapers and magazines. He has won several national and international prizes and his works have been exhibited in Portugal, Spain, Brazil, France and the USA. André Carrilho lives and works in Lisbon.

In 2002 he was awarded the Gold Award for Illustration Portfolio by the Society for News Design (USA), one of the world´s major prizes for illustration. The New Yorker, The New York Times, Word, Vanity Fair, The Independent on Sunday and Diário de Notícias are just a few of many titles where we can find his works. He has also directed an animation short-film Jantar em Lisboa, (Dinner in Lisbon) on a screen-play by J. P. Simões.

 

2nd Prize - “Sarkozy” by Carbajo (Espanha) published in the magazine El Jueves (Spain) on 26.11.08;

Javier Carbajo Alfonso was born in Cangas del Narcea - Astúrias (Spain) in 1971. He graduated in Art and Design from Barcelona University. An artist with a special passion for caricature and cartoons, he began working as a freelance illustrator for several publications along with work as character designer and animator. For three years he worked as creative director in Terra Networks, developing the animation web production "Geriátrico". Now based in Madrid, he contributes for many magazines and media such as El Jueves, Rolling Stone, Cinemanía, while beginning to illustrate in the children´s field with La Galera.

 

3rd Prize - “Cortazar” by Baptistão (Brazil) published in the newspaper “O Estado de São Paulo” (Brazil)  on 31.08.08.

Eduardo Baptistão was born in São Paulo in 1966.  He has got a degree in Publicity and Propaganda at Cásper Líbero in 1988. He works as illustrator for the editorial market since 1985, when he published his first work in “Folha de São Paulo”. Contributes or has contributed for publications such as Veja, Você S/A, Imprensa, Vogue, Vip, Quem, Sexy, Playboy, Placar, amongst many others. He is an illustrator for “O Estado de São Paulo” since 1991, and for “Jornal da Tarde” since 2003, as well as contributing for “Carta Capital” magazine since 1995.  He has been awarded several prizes: Salão Internacional de Desenho para Imprensa de Porto Alegre (1st Prize for Caricature and Honourable Mention for Editorial Illustration in 2000, 1st Prize for Editorial Illustration in 2004, Honourable Mention for Caricature in 2007), HQ Mix Trophy for Best Caricaturist in 2001, 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2007; Salão de Humor Carlos Drummond de Andrade de Itabira (1st Prize for Caricature in 2002); Estadão Prize, Arts and Illustration category (1st Prize in 2002, 2004, 2006 and 2007; The 7th Tehran International Cartoon Biennial - Iran (1st Prize for Caricature in 2005); World Press Cartoon - Portugal (1st Prize for Caricature in 2006). Prize SIP (Inter-American Press Society) - USA (Caricature winner in 2007); Salão Carioca de Humor (1st Prize for Caricature in 2008).  JT Prize, Arts/Illustration category (1st Prize in 2008)

 

For the Editorial Cartoon category, the jury awarded the following prizes:

 

1st Prize - “In the same ship” by Naranjo (Mexico) published in the newspaper El Universal (Mexico) in 17.09.08

 

 

2nd Prize - “Wall Street” by Tom Janssen (Netherlands) published in the magazine “Trouw” (Netherlands) on 19.03.08

Tom (born in The Netherlands, Breda, 1950) is working as an editorial cartoonist since 1976 for the respected Dutch national daily “Trouw”, after graduating from the art academy in Amsterdam.   He always had a passion for cartooning about news and politics. The fun is in catching the essence in a satirical image. Since 1983 he also works for a combination of 12 Dutch papers called ‘the “Netherlands Press Association” (GPD) with a distribution of over one million subscribers. His work is further published in all sorts of magazines. His cartoons are distributed internationally by the ‘Cartoonists and Writers Syndicate’ (CWS) in New York and ‘Le Courrier International’ in Paris. He was awarded ‘the Premio Satirica’ of Forte dei Marmi 2002 with 12 other cartoonists of the former European Community, the third prize at the World Press Cartoon 2006, the BeNeprijs 2006 for the best cartoon from Belgium and the Netherlands,  the ’Inktspotprijs’ 2004 and 2008 for best Dutch editorial cartoon.

 

3rd Prize - “ Krisis Ekonomi” by Toshow (Serbia) published in the newspaper Vecerne Novosti (Serbia) on 15.11.08.

Toso Borkovic was born in 1954 in the Serbia province of former Yugoslavia. Professional cartoonist and illustrato, he works currently for the Serb newspaper Vercejne Novosti in Belgrade.  He has won the GOLDEN DATE Bordiguera in 1982, the proeminent Serb/Yugoslav GOLDEN PJER in 1984, 1988, 1992 and 2007, the Yomiuri Shimbun 1985, the Goethe Institut 1st Prize in 2000 and 2001; also, the Grand Prix Deva Romanija 2001, 1st Prize Satirikon Legnice 2001, 2nd Prize – World Press Cartoon-2007, Grand Prix Plevjla, Montenegro 2008 and the Golden Helmet Krusevac (Serbia) in 2009.

For the Gag category, the following prizes have been awarded:

 

1st Prize - “Punk Fish” by Simanca (Cuba), published in the magazine “Muito” (Brazil) on 01.06.08;

Osmani Simanca was born in Santa Clara, Cuba, in 1960 but has lived in Brazil since 1995 and took on Brazilian nationality. He graduated at the "San Alejandro" Fine Arts Academy and the Higher Institute for the Arts in Havana. He began his career as caricaturist and illustrator in 1975, at the humour newspaper ‘Dedeté’ in Havana.  Editorial cartoonist for A TARDE newspaper in Salvador, Bahia, his drawings have been published in newspapers and magazines all over the world. His several awards include: 1987 – Gag Prix from the Cuban Writers and Artists National Union (UNEAC) Havana, Cuba. 2000 - VII Bienal de Caricatura y Dibujo Humorístico de Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain. 2004 - "Knack" Prize 43 Knokke-Heist Cartoonfestival, Belgium. Prize Ex Aequo, Biennale Internazionale Eurohumor 2003 - 2004, Borgo San Dalmazzo.  Italy. 2005 – 3rd Prize, The United Nations Correspondents Association, Ranan Lurie Political Cartoon Award for the Year 2004, New York, USA.  2006  - 1st Prize, GREEKARTOON "Cartoon Bridging Cultures",  Ministry for Culture, Athens.  In 1994 was awarded the honour “Distinção Por la Cultura Nacional” from the Cuban Ministry for Culture and in 2000 the State Officer Merit Order Renascença do Piauí from the Brazilian State of Piaui government. General Concept and coordinator for the I and II Bahia´s Humour International Salon 2001-2002 in Bahia Museum of Modern Art, Salvador, Brasil.

 

2nd Prize - “No title” by Géza Halász (Hungary) published in the newspaper Magyar Nemzet (Hungary) on 11.10.08

Economist, web-graphic artist, satirical fine artist and cartoonist, Géza Halász was born in 1947, in Szolnok, Hungary. Studied at Karl Marx University of Economics and got a Doctorate degree. He became a journalist at Hungarian Television, Assistant lecturer of Informatics at Karl Marx University of Economics and later Chief Editor for Számalk Publishing House. He has been also Editorial manager and cover designer for Aula University Press. Since 2007, he is Creative director at Corvinno Technology Transfer Center. In 1968 became cartoonist for the„Közgazdász” university newspaper and in 2002, held the Halász Géza Show” at Magyar Nemzet Weekend Supplement. In 2003 he became President of the Cartoonist Department of National Union of Hungarian Journalists. His first exhibition was held in 1977 in Budapest. Other exhibitions: 1987 Ars Electronica, Linz, 1988 Computer is also Human, International Cartoon Exhibition, Budapest (1st Prize), 1998 - early Hungarian Cartoon-art Festival, Budapest (prize of Ministry for Foreign Affairs, and some other prizes), 2003 - yearly Best of the Year Cartoon Exhibition by the Cartoonist Department of the National Union of Hungarian Journalists, Budapest. 2006 - Works exhibited also in the Hungarian Academia, Rome and Collegium Hungaricum, Vienna.

 

3rd Prize - “No Title”, by Balaban (Romania) published in the newspaper “Luxemburger Wort “(Luxembourg) on 17.10.08.

Born in Nicoresti (Romania) in 1968. Since 1996, he lives in Luxembourg.   Self educated in art, he has a degree in Physical and Sport. Education from  Transylvania Brasov University (1995). Political cartoonist for the daily newspapers Luxemburger Wort and La Voix du Luxembourg.  Twenty personal exhibitions in Luxembourg, Romania, Switzerland, Germany, Austria and Scotland. Premio Internationale Satira Politica (ex-aequo) in Forte dei Marmi, Italy (2002), Honourable Mention at the World Press Cartoon (2008), Honourable Mention at the Syrian Cartoon (2008). Several books and more than 6000 cartoons published. Vianden Caricature and Cartoon International Contest organiser. Founder of the Vianden Caricature and Cartoon Museum.
